這是首膾炙人口的抒情短章。當是作者在梓州幕后期思歸寄酬京華友人之作。前兩句通過問答和眼前景物的描繪，寫出長久客居的無奈心情。后兩句從眼前景生發(fā)開去，遙想來日重逢歡樂之時再來暢談今夜孤身客居的情景，構(gòu)思之妙，出人意外。

如此，在空間往復對照，在時間上回環(huán)對比，虛實相生，情景交融，構(gòu)成完美的藝術(shù)境界。更深切地寫出了今日客居之苦和他日重逢之樂。整首詩明白如話，卻又曲折深婉，兼有民歌樸素雋永與文人詩表情細膩的特點。

融凄清與溫煦、黯然與神往、寂寥與慰藉為一體，構(gòu)成極為含蓄蘊藉的內(nèi)在情韻美。何焯用“水精如意玉連環(huán)”形容此詩風格，頗為形象。
